What is the skin barrier?

We’ve been talking about protecting the skin barrier, and how to know if it’s damaged, but what is the skin barrier?

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin and it acts as a protective shield, keeping moisture in and harmful substances out. This barrier is made up of dead skin cells, natural oils, and lipids, which work together to protect the body from environmental damage, bacteria, and toxins while also preventing dehydration. When the skin barrier is healthy, it helps maintain the skin’s overall appearance and functionality. However, if it becomes damaged, the skin can become dry, irritated, and more prone to conditions like eczema or acne. Think of your skin barrier as your skin’s immune system.
